Affordable housing for everyone
The current Rent Guidelines Board (RGB) must be more representative
of the communities it serves.
The RGB should hold rents where they are right now,
and also bring more labor, tenant, and community activists on to an expanded
and more democratic Board.
Better housing and healthcare options for seniors
Seniors need assistance to live on their own. One way city
government can help is to support "naturally occurring retirement communities"
(NORCs), which are apartment complexes or neighborhoods where more
than half the residents are over age 60.
Services such as at-home nursing care could be
better and more efficiently coordinated in such communities. Seniors living
in such areas should receive direct support from the city, and the increased
efficiency in services could probably make up the entire cost of the program.
