I've never been inclined to walk around the medina before it opens, but with kids that wake up early and get restless in a hotel room it was the perfect time. I have to say this was the highlight of the trip for me. It was just so peaceful to be in the empty market with just a handful of people transporting their wares or starting to open up. Once the shops open you don't get to see all the interesting doors and carvings that are underneath all that stuff.

Newborns, Running Rhinos and Angry Lions made for an exciting trip

Doesn't that lion look like it is ready to pounce? What set it off was Ava, Dylan and a friend running around playing tag and it totally caught her eye and she was very agitated. I was honestly thinking to myself that I hoped the glass was going to hold up when she tried to attack us.

$250 Million Trip

Today we visited Morocco's new mall. Reports say it's one of the five largest in the world. It is totally bizarre to me that this is in existence in this country and the bizarreness of it all was confirmed when we visited today. There are many observations that fall into the bizarre category, but the most bizarre, though not surprising at all, is the fact that there are almost no actual shoppers.

Someone is excited...

The watch and Eiffel Tower made out of flowers just made me laugh. I'm sure there was a lot more of this type of thing but we didn't see the whole mall. The way people were posing in front of these was HILARIOUS (you can catch a glimpse of that in the Eiffel Tower photo)

Pottery and Mosaics

Helene and I had a very interesting morning at a pottery cooperative in Fes. The stories are too many to even begin to go into here. Long story short we painted a piece of pottery with a lot of guidance and we placed tiles where we were told to make a pretty cool, we'll call it, over-sized coaster.

Fun with Cardboard

Originally when I saw all the boxes with our stuff I had grand plans for the coolest, cheapest, playhouse ever. Then I got lazy, dialed a magic number and told them to come pick up all the boxes. A friend re-motivated me so I kept two boxes. Not the coolest playhouse ever, but still a lot of fun with just a little bit of cutting. When they get bored with it as is, I'll bust out the paint, that should kill an afternoon...

And in case anyone is wondering about Dylan's hair, last time I shaved it too short so I was going to go a bit longer this time. Instead, by accident mid-cut, I used the over the ear attachment. Oops, so we end up even shorter this time, but Dylan is a great sport about the whole thing and still looks pretty cute to me.

Poor Dylan

So again, our rooms all look so sad right now but I just had to post this photo of Dylan's sleeping situation. It's great that they lend us something while we wait for our crib but I have to say this "crib" has been a little scary. It's really more of a bassinet, when Dylan stands up his waist is about at the top of the rail, hence the mattress on the ground. Thankfully he hasn't launched himself out yet. Oh and I try to not even think about how the slats are installed underneath the mattress.

Proud of her Artwork

"A picture for Daddy with lots of hearts because I love him SO much"

Note: One of my favorite things Ava has said this week, "Mommy, does chicken come from chickens"

Our Room

The rooms look a bit empty and random right now since we still only have what we brought with us on the plane. I'm happy that they put curtains up for us yesterday but the colors are not necessarily what we would pick, although Dylan did get a decent blue and Ava is happy with her dark red.

Perfect Spot for the Time Out Chair (although the chair is a little too cushy)

Ups and Downs

I think all in all the trip over was better than I expected but it started off pretty rocky. After super shuttling it to the airport we schlepped into the airport check in line with 2 car seats, a stroller, 4 backpacks and 6 suitcases just to be told that we only have two seats on the flight. If there was ever a time that I was going to murder someone it would have been in that moment. The way they looked at us like there was nothing in the world they could do for us was beyond infuriating. I non-verbally communicated to Sam that he better figure something out because there was no F ing way I was doing that all again another day. An hour and 45 minutes later we got our four boarding passes and walked straight onto the plane. The kids were up for a few hours but then they did fall asleep for a short nap although it was nighttime. Ava had a total meltdown when she woke up an hour later. But that was really the worst of our first flight. During our 4 hour lay over in Paris I realized I left my iTouch on the plane so of course I was annoyed by that. Paris to Rabat was easy, we were upgraded and had about 12 rows between us and another family, Ava slept the whole way, and Dylan half way. Sleeping would have been a lot easy for the kids if you could put the arm rests up, so Ava slept in a ball and Dylan slept in my arms. Of course Sam and I got no sleep, couldn't think straight and were falling asleep mid sentence, but somehow we all got to our expansive house and all slept through our first night in Rabat.
